I was recently attacked on social media about advertising my Reiki healing services. This person came across as a religious fanatic and stated that Reiki is ‘unkosher’ (illegitimate) and that I should get a ‘real’ job.
What is a ‘real’ job? Is it an 8am to 5pm, sit behind the desk and a computer, attending endless meetings, dealing with abusive colleagues, attending endless meetings and dealing with endless office politics? Or is it a job that requires one to do hard manual labour or study for years to get a diploma or degree? A ‘real’ job to me is one that is done honestly, earning one’s pay assisting others.
I have five different ‘real’ jobs. First and foremost I’m a mother to two boys and a married to a wonderful man. That on it’s own is a REAL, unpaid job which I hope, pays dividends in future when my children grow up and become independent. I hope I am doing a good, no,a great job today, bringing up my children to be honest, in integrity, kind, independent and self confident future men. This alone will benefit society and possibly some day, their future partners and wives.
I am a High Court certified Portuguese interpretor and translator, which benefits people. I’m a qualified fitness instructor and teach fitness at the local gym which benefits people and their health and fitness levels, I am a qualified executive personal assistant, a qualified pet groomer, a university graduate, and a registered social worker and psychotherapist in private practice. Once again – I assist people to deal with their issues and challenges and enable my client to heal psychological, emotionally and possibly physically. Real job
Whom is to say that begging in the streets, prostitution, drug dealing, newspaper delivering, or voluntary work aren’t real jobs? Any activity can be made into a job when one is doing an activity for gain. No work is done for non-gain. We all gain something by doing something for someone else be it voluntary work or paid work. Humans have the need to do things for emotional, psychological, physical or spiritual gain. No exceptions.
