Social Work

What is Social Work about?

Social work is a profession dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities. It addresses a wide range of social challenges through research, crisis intervention, policy advocacy, educational programs, direct practice, group therapy, and community organizing. At its core, social work is about striving for social justice and equality.

Social workers support individuals, families, groups, and communities dealing with issues such as disability, poverty, illness, and family challenges, including divorce, abandonment, abuse, and unemployment. They work tirelessly to empower those facing disadvantages and create opportunities for positive change.

How Do You Become a Social Worker?

In South Africa, social workers are highly trained professionals who must complete a four-year degree in Social Work, such as the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) offered by Unisa, and obtain a license to practice, as required by law.

Qualified social workers combine professional education with strong interpersonal, listening, organizational, and problem-solving skills. These abilities allow them to:

  • Connect deeply with individuals, groups, and communities.
  • Understand verbal and non-verbal communication, including body language, facial expressions, and unspoken cues.
  • Build trust and create a safe space for meaningful dialogue and positive change.
Inner Essence Therapy services

A holistic and multicultural approach.

For me, being multilingual is a deeply personal advantage in my work as a social worker. Speaking English, Brazilian Portuguese, and Hebrew, along with understanding Spanish, allows me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds in a way that feels authentic and inclusive. Language is more than just a tool—it’s a bridge to understanding someone’s culture, experiences, and emotions.

This ability to communicate across cultures helps me create a truly personalized approach, ensuring every client feels seen, heard, and valued for who they are. Whether I’m working with individuals or facilitating group sessions, I draw on my knowledge, training, and empathy to guide clients through challenges and help them find meaningful paths forward.
